Empowering Diversity in the FHIR community

Welcome to Women for FHIR, launched at FHIR DevDays 2023 in Amsterdam! Women for FHIR is a space for women to connect, collaborate, mentor, and empower each other to foster a more inclusive and innovative FHIR community.

The Women for FHIR initiative was born out of a recognition of the unique challenges women face in the interoperability communities and the importance of the female perspective in shaping the healthcare system. Despite progress in some areas, disparities such as pay inequality and underrepresentation — both in the workforce and clinical use cases — persist.

Women for FHIR aims to:

  • Create greater awareness in everyday life and within one’s own environment.
  • Promote the openness of the community, both towards individuals and to topics related to gender equality and the challenges women face in the technology industry.
  • Incorporate women’s perspectives into FHIR standards to address gender-specific healthcare challenges and ensure technology reflects the needs of all individuals.
  • Actively empower women’s participation and leadership in the FHIR community by creating targeted initiatives, promoting women as speakers, and fostering inclusive spaces for dialogue.

These are just some of the ways we can empower women within the FHIR community but promoting diversity and inclusion requires collective action. Let’s work together to give women a stronger voice in the interoperability community and drive sustainable change.
