HL7 FHIR DevDays
Student Track
June 3-6, 2025
Amsterdam

What is the Student Track?
HL7 FHIR DevDays is all about healthcare interoperability, a place where hundreds of like-minded people come together to talk about FHIR and how it can improve healthcare. The Student Track provides a unique opportunity for students to not only join and interact with the FHIR community, but to also go hands-on with the standard and learn from fellow students and FHIR experts.
Student teams from across Europe are joining the international FHIR community to showcase their creativity, skills, and teamwork. Over the course of the event, teams will present innovative projects that explore how FHIR can help solve real-world healthcare challenges.
This year’s student track brings together a diverse group of participants with fresh perspectives and bold ideas. Join us throughout the day to support the next generation of digital health innovators and see what they’ve been working on!
Two European universities will join us in Amsterdam. There is a competitive element to the track. The members of the jury for the student pitches are:
- James Agnew, Smile Digital Health
- Gino Canessa, Microsoft
- Mirjam Baltus, Firely
Three teams from two universities will participate:
- University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands
- University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Austria

Student Projects
Discover the innovative projects the student teams are bringing to DevDays 2025. From improving interoperability to tackling real-world healthcare challenges, these solutions reflect the creativity, collaboration, and technical skills of the next generation of digital health leaders.
Team 1 — MommyNotes
University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands
A simple, patient-centered mobile app designed for pregnant women with low health literacy. The app, pulls clinical notes and health data from EHRs using FHIR, then translates complex medical language into easy-to-understand summaries. Users can view key appointment details, track their health over time, and securely share simplified notes with caregivers or family members. By combining FHIR interoperability with inclusive design, this tool empowers patients to better understand and engage with their maternal care.
Team 2 — FHIR-LOS-ophy – FHIR based Length of Stay Prediction
University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Austria
Using the MIMIC-IV on FHIR dataset, we try to predict the length of stay (LOS) in intensive care units (ICU) for patients with kidney failure. By predicting a patient’s length of stay, hospitals have the opportunity to improve their resource planning and reduce costs. These predictions facilitate a patient’s medical history, initial vital and laboratory parameters, as well as administrative data. The project heavily focuses on the parsing and transforming of FHIR data into a format that can be processed by machine learning techniques.
Team 3 — CalmFHIR – Structured Panic Attack Logging with Emergency Support
University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Austria
CalmFHIR is an Android application that enables users to log panic attacks using structured data based on HL7 FHIR R4. Through a guided interface, users can record details such as duration, trigger, and severity, with each episode saved as a FHIR Observation resource linked to a Patient. Beyond documentation, the app provides immediate support during panic episodes through a dedicated meditation section featuring guided breathing and self-soothing exercises. In critical moments, users can also contact predefined emergency contacts directly from the app. This project demonstrates real-time FHIR client integration, showcasing a practical mental health use case while addressing challenges in mobile-FHIR communication.
