Why we created FHIR DevDays Strategy Day: A new DevDays experience for healthcare leaders

Rien Wertheim

DevDays has always been known as the go-to event for implementers working with FHIR. It’s where the brightest minds in health IT come together to learn, code, and push the boundaries of interoperability.

But over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with healthcare leaders, decision-makers, and policymakers who told me the same thing: “DevDays looks amazing, but I’m not a developer. Where do I fit in?”

We heard you loud and clear. And that’s exactly why we created Strategy Day.

Strategy Day is for the decision-makers: the CIOs, CMIOs, enterprise architects, policymakers, and project managers who are shaping the future of healthcare IT. It’s for those that may not get involved in writing code but have a need to understand FHIR at a strategic level.

How does FHIR impact regulations? How can it drive interoperability in your organization? How do you make informed decisions about adoption and integration?

That’s where Strategy Day comes in. This day is about giving you the practical insights and strategic discussions you need to make informed choices about FHIR adoption, data interoperability, and compliance. We’re creating an environment that’s engaging, interactive, and—most importantly—practical.

At Strategy Day, we’ll cover:

  • The FHIR fundamentals you need to have meaningful conversations with your technical teams.
  • How to build a business case for your FHIR project.
  • The key regulations you need to know now—and what’s coming in the EU and beyond.
  • How FHIR and openEHR compare: differences, overlap, and integrations, and the collaboration between the two communities.
  • What skills your team needs to implement and maintain a FHIR infrastructure.
  • The classic build vs. buy dilemma: what to develop in-house and what to purchase.

Most importantly, it’s not just a day of presentations. We’ve designed it as a small, intimate gathering (max 50 people) to encourage real discussions, meaningful connections, and deep dives into the topics that matter most to you.

One of the reasons I’m so excited for Strategy Day is the speaking lineup. We’ve brought in some of the biggest names in health IT to share their insights.

  • Grahame Grieve, the creator of FHIR himself, and Rachel Dunscombe, CEO of openEHR International, will discuss the collaboration of the two standards.
  • Darren Devitt, a leading voice in the FHIR community, will dive into FHIR for execs, things you need to know and things you don’t need to know.
  • Sylvia Thun, Germany’s #1 expert on interoperability, will be discussing the current and future German legislation that will mandate FHIR (or not).
  • Rutt Lindström, who will discuss the impact of the European Health Data Space.
  • To be announced, sessions covering the interoperability policies in the Netherlands.
  • And yes, I’ll be there too, sharing how to go about building a business case for a FHIR project, including the costs and benefits, pitfalls, and best practices.

Why you shouldn’t miss this

If you’re a healthcare leader navigating the complexities of digital transformation, Strategy Day is your chance to get ahead of the curve. It’s a rare opportunity to hear from the experts, connect with peers facing similar challenges, and walk away with actionable insights that can shape your organization’s strategy.

And the best part? After a full day of insightful discussions, you’ll also get to mingle with the broader DevDays technical audience over dinner. The best conversations often happen over a great meal, and we’re making sure you have that opportunity too.

If you want to know more, visit the Strategy Day page for all the details or reach out directly to me. Spots are very limited (only 50 attendees), so get in quick.

See you there!
