FHIR DevDays 2026 Guide for Newcomers

Ward Weistra

Welcome to FHIR DevDays 2026! Whether you’re a first-time attendee or new to FHIR, we’re thrilled to have you join our vibrant and supportive community from June 15-18 in Minneapolis.

DevDays is an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in all things FHIR, whether you are a developer, a healthcare professional, or simply curious about the future of healthcare interoperability.

We understand that attending a large event like DevDays can be a lot! There are parallel tracks running throughout the week, a mix of beginner and advanced sessions, spontaneous hallway conversations, social events, and a lot of acronyms.

But don’t worry, first-timers often say the first morning felt overwhelming and the last day felt like they’d been coming for years. And to help you navigate the event and make the most of your experience, we’ve put together some tips and a suggested program.

  • Grab a first-timer ribbon: When you pick up your badge, be sure to pick up a first-timer ribbon. This way, the “experienced” DevDays crowd will know to say hi and help you feel right at home.
  • Look for the yellow shirts: The people in yellow are there to help. They might look busy, but they’re genuinely happy to answer questions or point you in the right direction.
  • Join the welcome talk: On Tuesday morning, there’s a “Find your way around DevDays” portion of the Opening Session where everything will be explained, from the program structure to the different types of sessions available. This is a great way to get oriented.
  • First-timers meeting point: On Tuesday morning there’s a dedicated first-timers gathering from 10:00 to 10:30. It’s a low-key way to meet DevDays team members (both HL7 and Firely) and FHIR community experts before the day gets busy.
  • Mix and match sessions: While we’ve suggested a program below, feel free to tailor your schedule to your interests. DevDays offers a wide range of sessions catering to all levels of FHIR expertise.
  • Filter by track: Want to check out all the beginner sessions in one place? Head over to the DevDays Schedule, click on Filter by Track, and select the Beginner track.
  • Show up for the social events: DevDays is not just about the sessions; it’s about building connections. Participate in the social events, like the drinks at the end of the day or the morning run on Thursday. These informal gatherings are perfect for networking and making new friends in the FHIR community.
  • Don’t forget to relax:  A lot is going on at DevDays, and you don’t have to attend every slot. Taking a break, getting coffee, or having an unplanned hallway conversation often turns out to be the most valuable part of the day.
