DevDays 2026 is getting a new shape — here’s how to choose your best experience
FHIR DevDays has always been the place where the FHIR community comes to learn, connect, and swap the kind of hard-won lessons you only get by doing the work. It’s where people show up with laptops, opinions, and curiosity — and where “take it home on Thursday, implement next Monday” isn’t just a slogan, it’s the vibe.
Over the past few years, we kept hearing two things from across the community. “I’m new to FHIR and want to understand the basics first” and “I’m not a developer, but I still need to make decisions about FHIR.” So for 2026, we redesigned the DevDays schedule to make it easier to shape your week around what you actually need.
DevDays 2026 in Minneapolis (June 15–18) now brings together three options:
- HL7 FHIR Foundations Bootcamp | Preconference Program |
Monday, June 15
- HL7 FHIR Strategy Forum | Preconference Program |
Monday, June 15
- The main 3-day DevDays conference |
Tuesday–Thursday, June 16–18
Below is a quick walkthrough of what each program is for — and how to pick the mix that will give you the biggest return on your time (and for some of you, the jet lag).
HL7 FHIR Foundations Bootcamp on June 15 | Start your FHIR journey with confidence
If you’re new to FHIR—or have been FHIR-adjacent and want to connect the dots—the Foundations Bootcamp is your hands-on on-ramp.
This beginner-friendly preconference covers the essentials: core resources, the API model, profiling, terminologies, and what real implementation discussions sound like. You’ll get a mix of expert guidance and practical exercises to build intuition you can use right away.
It’s designed for developers and architects new to FHIR, project/product managers, and clinical or business stakeholders—and for anyone who wants to get more out of DevDays.
DevDays moves fast. The Bootcamp helps you keep up from day one, ask better questions, and choose the right sessions. The Bootcamp can be attended on its own or combined with a full conference pass — whatever works best for you.
The day wraps up with the Welcome Reception, open to all June 15 preconference attendees and main conference ticket holders alike. It’s a great first chance to connect with the wider DevDays community over drinks and bites.
HL7 FHIR Strategy Forum on June 15 | For leaders shaping the “why” and “how” of FHIR adoption
FHIR is no longer just a technical choice, it’s a strategic one. Regulations, national programs, procurement, governance, and build-vs-buy decisions now shape interoperability work every day.
That’s why the HL7 FHIR Strategy Forum exists: a curated, interactive preconference day for people who lead FHIR initiatives without living in code. It’s a chance to step back from implementation details and focus on what drives long-term impact—aligning standards and policy, making investment choices, pressure-testing roadmaps, and learning from peers.
You’ll meet providers, payers, health system and Health IT leaders, policy/standards stakeholders, and interoperability program owners. The format is panels, facilitated table discussions, and structured networking—built for real exchange, not slide decks.
Like the Bootcamp, the Strategy Forum can be attended standalone or paired with a full conference pass. And the day ends with the Welcome Reception, where all preconference and main conference attendees come together — making it a natural starting point for the conversations that carry through the rest of the week.
The HL7 FHIR DevDays 3-day conference on June 16–18 | Learn, go deep, and build what’s next
Then comes what DevDays is famous for: three packed days of keynotes, tutorials, project presentations, workshops, and community-driven sessions — covering both the latest in the FHIR standard and the realities of implementing it at scale.
The main conference is intentionally broad — and that’s part of the magic. It’s a place where developers, architects, healthcare leaders, policy folks, and innovators share the same hallways and coffee lines..
The program is built to help you:
- Deepen implementation skills (and avoid common traps)
- Learn what’s emerging across the ecosystem
- Bring back practical ideas you can apply immediately in your own context
And yes — it’s also where many of the best conversations happen outside the talks: hallway debates, dinner tables, “wait, show me that repo,” and the kind of networking that feels more like joining a community than collecting business cards.
So… which path should you take?
Here’s a simple way to choose:
- New to FHIR? Do the Foundations Bootcamp + Conference. You’ll get oriented fast, then use the main program to explore what’s possible.
- Leading or governing FHIR adoption? Do the Strategy Forum + (optional) Conference. Use the Forum to sharpen your direction, then use DevDays to pressure-test it against real implementation stories.
- Already implementing and want to go deep? Jump straight into the 3-day Conference — and treat the preconference day as an optional add-on.
